3M PPS1
Senior Thesis
3M PPS1 is a coarse particle sensor designed to track, record and alert wearers of hazardous particles they come in contact with on the job.
A first of its kind connected safety device geared towards data collection, 3M PPS1 is designed to inform the industry of the volume and severity of on-the-job respiratory hazards in fields such as construction, mining, sand blasting, etc.
*This project is a concept and does not represent the interests of 3M*
ROLE: Research, Concept Development, Ideation, CAD, Model Making
INITIAL IDEaTION:
Crude models were created to test out the optimal size and location of the device on the users safety helmet.
Concept Refinement:
(above) Foam models are used to experiment, refine, and validate forms seen in 2D form development sketches. The models are a more true representation of the products size and feel.
(below) Orthographic sketches were developed using preliminary CAD geometry based off of foam models to quickly iterate on details such as ventilation, subtle silhouette variants, and button placement.
